Across the street from the Chambers County Courthouse stands a silent sentinel. It’s not a towering oak or a weathered statue, but a simple aluminum plaque. This is the Chambers County Courthouse Plaque, a testament to the building’s enduring legacy. The plaque tells a story, a story woven into the very fabric of Anahuac and Chambers County. The courthouse, completed in 1937, stands as a symbol of the town’s resilience and the county’s rich history. It is a combination of Art Deco and Moderne architectural styles, a departure from the Renaissance Revival style of its predecessor that burned down. The Chambers County Courthouse Plaque reminds us that before the current building graced this spot, others came before. The first three courthouses were actually located in Wallisville. In 1908, Anahuac, with its impressive rice canal system, won the honor of being the county seat. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Chambers County, a chapter etched in the stone and steel of the courthouse we see today.
