Could a Jewish community thrive in a place once considered a cultural desert? The Chabad of South Bay stands as proof that it can. The Chabad of South Bay, located in Lomita, has become a cornerstone of the Jewish community in an area once lacking in Jewish resources. In the 1970s, the South Bay was a different landscape for Jewish life. There were few options for kosher food, Jewish education, or community gatherings. Rabbi Eli Hecht, who arrived in the South Bay in 1973, remembers a time when Jewish residents were less open about their faith. He recalls a shift from those early days to the present, where expressions of Jewish faith, such as displaying mezuzahs and menorahs, are now commonplace. The Chabad of South Bay has played a vital role in this transformation. Led by Rabbi Hecht and Rabbi Sholom Pinson, the Chabad offers a variety of programs. These include a Hebrew school, a mikvah, and the Maimonides Torah Academy. They also have Gan Israel, a summer camp, and the Bilowit Learning Center. It serves as a hub for Jewish life in the area. The Chabad of South Bay’s growth reflects the larger trend of the burgeoning Jewish community in the South Bay. Once a place where Jewish residents had to travel to West Los Angeles for cultural amenities, the South Bay now boasts a vibrant and growing Jewish population. The Chabad of South Bay, with its numerous programs and dedicated leadership, continues to nourish the Jewish community’s roots and foster a sense of belonging in the South Bay.
