Established in the summer of 1990 the Chabad Jewish Center of Metairie stands as a beacon of Jewish life in suburban New Orleans. It wasn’t always this impressive building. This center began as a response to the growing Jewish community in Metairie. Rabbi Yossie and Chanie Nemes took the helm guiding the center through its early years. They served the needs of the community.
The current building arrived later. Construction finished in the spring of 1999. Dedicated to the memory of Gerson Katz the new facility allowed the Chabad Jewish Center of Metairie to greatly expand its programs. The center is much more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for educational and social service programs. The center hosts events that attract diverse participation from across the New Orleans Jewish community. Hundreds of New Orleanians contribute regularly to the center and its various initiatives.
People often don’t realize the importance of community centers like this one. They provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all. Regardless of background observance or knowledge everyone is welcome to pray at the Chabad Jewish Center of Metairie. They have prayer books in both Hebrew and English. Even those marking a Yahrtzeit the anniversary of a loved one’s passing are welcomed to recite the Kaddish. This shows the center’s commitment to inclusivity and support.
