“Kosher food in Western China? Impossible!” some might say. Not so fast. Right here in Chengdu stands the Chabad house. This is a beacon of Jewish life. It offers a welcoming space for locals and travelers alike.

The Chabad house in Chengdu began in 2012. Rabbi Dovi Henig and his wife Sarale came to Chengdu. They became the Rebbe’s emissaries. At first, the Chabad house was in a small apartment. As the community grew, it moved to larger villas. In seven years, they relocated five times.

The Chabad house now plans to build a permanent home. This new building will include many facilities. There will be a Mikveh, a Jewish Preschool, and a Kosher Restaurant. Also planned are a Synagogue, guest suites, and social halls. It aims to fulfill all the needs of the Jewish community in Chengdu.

The welcome center is the first stop for visitors. Here, you can find information about travels, studies, and business. The Kosher Restaurant is unique. It is the only one in western China. It offers both a place to eat and deliveries throughout the city. This makes keeping Kosher easy in Chengdu.

The Chabad house also has a Kosher store. It stocks items not found anywhere else in the city. Security is a priority. There is a full-time guard and a top-of-the-line security system. The social hall hosts Shabbat and holiday meals. It also holds events and programs.

The Chabad house includes a conference room. It is open for meetings, workshops, and classes. The library offers books in Hebrew and English. A lounge provides a space to relax. You can use the internet, make calls, and enjoy coffee.

Ganeinu is Chengdu’s Jewish Preschool of the Arts. It is the only one in western China. Children ages 1-4 learn about Jewish life. An indoor play area is available for children. It is used when outdoor play is unsafe due to pollution.

Chengdu has over 230 local Jews. Hundreds of travelers and business people visit each year. The Chabad house provides many services. These include adult education classes and a Jewish Women’s Circle. There is also a Men’s Club. They offer Shabbat and holiday services and meals. The Chabad house meets the community’s spiritual and physical needs.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Henigs faced challenges. They even left Chengdu for a time. But their commitment brought them back. They continue to support the Jewish community. Their work has evolved. They focus on the local Jews. They provide for the community’s needs. Rabbi Dovi Henig and his wife Sarale Henig are still there. They live at No.12, Qinghuafang, No.53, Shenxianshu South Road, Wuhou District, Chengdu.
