How many secrets do you think the CG Building holds? The CG Building stands as a testament to Bucharest’s layered history. It represents progress and the enduring spirit of education.

The Palace of the Parliament may overshadow it. Yet, the CG Building has its own story. It is an integral part of the city’s academic landscape.

Bucharest’s systematization program dramatically reshaped the city. Nicolae Ceaușescu was inspired by North Korea’s Juche ideology. He aimed to transform Romania into a “multilaterally developed socialist society.” This vision led to Project Bucharest, a plan to replicate Pyongyang.

Anca Petrescu, at 28, became the chief architect. She led a team of 700 architects. Construction began on June 25, 1984. Ceaușescu himself inaugurated the project. He regularly inspected the site.

The Palace of the Parliament is the heaviest building in the world. It weighs approximately 4,098,500 tonnes. Its construction involved immense resources. These included 700,000 tonnes of steel and bronze. Also, one million cubic meters of marble were used.

The Palace has 1,100 rooms. It also has an underground nuclear bunker. This bunker was designed to withstand nuclear war. It has 1.5-meter-thick concrete walls.

The Palace of the Parliament’s construction significantly impacted Bucharest. The Uranus-Izvor neighborhood was destroyed. Approximately 7 km2 of the old city center were demolished. This resulted in the relocation of 40,000 people.

The CG Building, though smaller, shares in this transformation. It stands on land that has seen much change. The building embodies Bucharest’s continuous adaptation.

The Palace of the Parliament valued at €4 billion. It is the most expensive administrative building in the world. Its ornate interior includes 23 sections. It houses the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

The Palace also houses museums. These include the National Museum of Contemporary Art. It also has the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism. About 70% of the Palace remains empty.

The Palace of the Parliament continues to sink 6 mm each year. Its weight causes the sediment layers below to settle. This subsidence reflects the building’s massive scale.

The Palace has served various purposes since its completion. Rupert Murdoch once tried to buy it for US$1 billion. In 2008, it hosted the NATO summit. There were proposals to convert it into a shopping center.

The Palace of the Parliament has appeared in several films. These include “The Nun” and “War Dogs”. It was also featured on “Top Gear”.

Even the image of the Palace is subject to copyright. The heirs of Anca Petrescu have sued for unauthorized commercial use of its image.

The CG Building stands in the shadow of this history. It provides education and fosters intellectual growth. The CG Building contributes to Bucharest’s identity. It helps to shape the city’s future. It stands as a symbol of learning in a city marked by grand ambition and complex history.
