Climbing Cerro Allieri is a unique Galapagos experience. Imagine yourself standing at the base of this impressive peak on Floreana Island. Cerro Allieri rises 340 meters above the landscape, offering breathtaking views. The journey begins with a 15-minute drive east from Port Velasco Ibarra along the main road, often handled by the municipal service. The hike itself takes about two hours round trip. It’s considered a medium to high difficulty level, so be prepared for a bit of exertion. The payoff, however, is well worth the effort. Cerro Allieri boasts a remarkable collection of plant life. Of the 48 identified species, over half are native to the Galapagos and a third are endemic, meaning they’re found nowhere else on Earth. Look for shrubs and trees like Darwiniothamnus tenuifolius, Lippia salicifolia, and Lecocarpus pinnatifidus. You might even spot the Scalesia pedunculata, a tree that blooms in February. Sadly, only about 15 of these trees remain. Decades ago, settlers called it “the unknown tree” due to its unique appearance. Its decline is attributed to goats and its use in building materials. Even rarer is the Linum cratericola. This critically endangered plant has only 40 surviving individuals. It was thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1997. Be mindful of the weather. Cerro Allieri receives up to 500mm of rain annually. The path can be muddy and slippery, so wear sturdy shoes. This climb unveils the true heart of Floreana’s botanical wonders. The view from the top of Cerro Allieri is simply unforgettable.
