Century Plaza South Tower

In 1975, two colossal structures pierced the Los Angeles skyline. These were the Century Plaza South Tower and its twin. They became instant landmarks in Century City. They were commissioned by ALCOA, an aluminum company. The renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki, known for his work on the World Trade Center, designed these towers. The Century Plaza South Tower, along with its twin, stand 44 stories tall. Their triangular footprint is unusual, setting them apart from other skyscrapers. Their design incorporates vertical black and grey lines. The aluminum exterior is a nod to their original owner, ALCOA. Interestingly, the aluminum alloy cladding used was first developed by ALCOA for Yamasaki’s World Trade Center. The Century Plaza Towers boast one of the world’s largest underground parking garages, accommodating roughly 5,000 cars. For years, these twin titans played prominent roles on the small and big screens. They served as the backdrop for the 1980s detective series “Remington Steele” and “Moonlighting”. They even made appearances in films like “Die Hard” and “The Green Hornet”. The towers also graced the album cover of Yes’s 1977 album, “Going for the One”. The Century Plaza South Tower isn’t just a building. It’s a piece of Los Angeles history, a testament to architectural ingenuity, and a star in its own right.
