The Centro de Artes e Ofícios dos Fornos da Cruz de Pedra occupies a special place. It’s an old pottery factory and family home of potters. This space lets us explore Guimarães’ pottery past. The architectural project respected the historic structures. It introduced a new building with contemporary flexible design. The design preserves elements of the old pottery.
What can you find inside the Centro de Artes e Ofícios? There is a museological center. It focuses on the region’s most characteristic trades. These include pottery textiles tanneries and cutlery. You will also find a shop and a studio. Here you can watch the making of the Cantarinha dos Namorados de Guimarães. You can even buy local handicrafts. The space promotes continuous learning. The Centro de Artes e Ofícios dos Fornos da Cruz de Pedra opened on June 24. The architect Filipe Silva designed it. Susana Milão curated the Reference Museological Center. Isabel Fernandes coordinated it scientifically.
Domingos Bragança the Mayor highlighted Guimarães’ care for its heritage. He said that remembering the past is important. Without it a community loses its identity. He mentioned Manuel Meneses. At 95 years old, he showed his passion for pottery. He emphasized the importance of preserving Guimarães’ traditions. Bragança concluded that those who lose their community memory cannot build a future.
Visits to the Centro de Artes e Ofícios are easy. Spontaneous visits are free. Guided tours cost 1.50 euros. Pottery workshops cost 3.00 euros.
