Stepping into the embrace of Madrid’s vibrant Guindalera neighborhood, we find ourselves before the Centro Cultural Buenavista. It’s not just a cultural center. It’s a story whispered through time, etched in brick and mortar. The Centro Cultural Buenavista stands on the grounds of what was once the Casa de Baños de la Guindalera, a public bathhouse built in 1935. This wasn’t just any bathhouse. It was one of three built during the Second Republic, a symbol of progress and public service. The Centro Cultural Buenavista holds onto this history. While its exact architect remains a mystery, some attribute it to Manuel Álvarez Naya or Gabriel Pradal. Both were part of the city’s technical team and known for their functional designs. The bathhouse served the community, with separate pools for men and women flanking a central vestibule. Post-Civil War renovations altered the building, particularly its roof, where skylights were removed. Decades later, between 1982 and 1983, architect Salvador Pérez Arroyo transformed the building into the Centro Cultural Buenavista. He cleverly integrated the new spaces with the existing structure, preserving the building’s character. One of the old pools became a library, complete with original tiles and varying levels. This repurposing gave new life to the building. It transformed it from a place of hygiene to a haven for knowledge and culture. The Centro Cultural Buenavista continued to evolve. A recent expansion added a 2,000 square meter trapezoidal structure. This modern addition complements the original bathhouse and a 2006 annex. The lower facade of the new building echoes the original bathhouse, creating a visual dialogue across time. Upper levels feature vertical porcelain pieces, known as Baguettes. These connect the center to the neighborhood’s characteristic exposed brick facades. The Centro Cultural Buenavista is more than just a building. It is a testament to Madrid’s resilience and adaptability. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine.
