“A hidden gem in Balboa Park? Absolutely!” The Centro Cultural de la Raza, right here before us, is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant testament to Chicano, Mexicano, Native American, and Latino art and culture. Established in 1970, the Centro Cultural de la Raza emerged from a powerful social movement. Think anti-war protests and the rise of Chicano activism. Individuals involved saw the need for a space owned and operated by Chicanos, for Chicanos. At San Diego State University, groups like MAYA and MALAF championed this idea. They recognized the critical need for a cultural hub and a place to showcase Chicano art. The Centro Cultural de la Raza started in the abandoned Ford Building in Balboa Park. Artists, including poet Alurista and visual artist Salvador Roberto Torres, transformed it into a buzzing artistic space. Ballet Folklorico en Aztlan, a dance group, also found a home there. By 1969, the Ford Building pulsed with Chicano artistic energy. The group formally became Los Toltecas en Aztlán, establishing a powerful collective identity. They envisioned a space dedicated to “Human Truth and Chicano Beauty.” They dreamt of a “Centro Cultural de la Raza” where art could flourish. While the city planned to convert the Ford Building into an aerospace museum, Los Toltecas en Aztlán fought for their cultural center. They refused to be evicted. After negotiations, the city offered an abandoned water tank. The artists transformed this unique structure into the Centro Cultural de la Raza, opening in 1971. Today, the Centro Cultural de la Raza is easily identifiable by the vibrant murals near the entrance. Inside, you’ll find offices, studios, a theater, and a gallery. The Centro continues to offer classes, presentations, and events showcasing a wide range of art forms. From Danza Azteca to Teatro Chicano, from film screenings to musical performances, the Centro pulsates with creative energy. It has nurtured countless artists and activists who have achieved national prominence. The Centro also houses Ballet Folklorico en Aztlan’s dance academy. It serves as a meeting space for community groups. This remarkable institution thrives on a spirit of community and a dedication to preserving and celebrating culture.
