Hidden within Geneva’s vibrant cultural scene lies the Centre of Photography. This isn’t just any museum. The Centre of Photography is a living, breathing laboratory, constantly experimenting with how we see and understand the world through the lens. Founded in 1984 by a group of eleven Genevan photographers, the Centre of Photography initially championed photography as a fine art. Their mission was to elevate this medium to its rightful place among the traditional arts. Over time, the Centre of Photography’s mission evolved. Under Joerg Bader’s leadership, from 2001 to 2021, it delved into the multifaceted world of photography. The Centre of Photography explored various production methods, dissemination techniques, and presentation styles. It became a hub for conferences, symposiums, and insightful publications. A common thread throughout this period was an emphasis on the “documentary style” and visual culture, often interacting with other art forms. The Centre of Photography embraced the idea that photography had become an integral part of contemporary art. It shifted its focus from historical and theoretical analysis to exploring the rising tide of vernacular photography. In the digital age, photography became ubiquitous. The Centre of Photography recognized this shift and positioned itself as a space for critical reflection on photography’s role in our society. In 2007, the Centre of Photography established its own publishing house. The “Éditions Centre de la photographie Genève” further solidified its influence. The Centre of Photography moved to the Bâtiment d’art contemporain (BAC) alongside other prominent art institutions. It also organized the triennial photography event, 50JPG (50 Days for Photography in Geneva). Today, led by Danaé Panchaud since 2022, the Centre of Photography continues to evolve. It champions photography’s potential for empowerment, especially as a means of self-expression. The Centre of Photography also delves into the power dynamics embedded within images. It uses photography as a tool for investigation and knowledge creation. Beyond exhibitions, the Centre of Photography offers a robust cultural mediation program. This program caters to students, professional artists and photographers, and the general public. Currently, the Centre of Photography has temporarily relocated to the Bibliothèque de Genève within the serene Bastions park while the BAC undergoes renovations. This new location allows the Centre of Photography to continue its vital work of exploring the world through the power of images.
