The Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement is dedicated to improving student learning. It achieves this by enhancing teaching effectiveness. Its mission is to promote collaborative professional development. The Centre’s objectives include promoting excellence in teaching and learning. It also supports quality teaching and learning.
The Centre fosters a collaborative culture. Faculty members dedicate themselves to continual progress. This commitment demonstrates the University’s focus on student-centered and outcome-based teaching. The Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement provides several functions. These include teaching evaluation and enhancement services. Professional development courses are also available. The Centre engages in educational development projects. It also provides research and other professional services.
One highlight was a half-day professional development event. It focused on reflective teaching. The event attracted 75 UM faculty members. Various theories and practices were shared. Tools were presented to facilitate reflective teaching. The Centre also invites guest speakers. Dr. Deborah Breen from Boston University shared her experience. Her talk focused on interactive lecturing.
The Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement offers instructional technology consultation. Faculty can discuss ways to apply educational technologies in their courses. The Centre also provides teaching assistant training. This program trains new graduate students. It aims to make them more effective teaching assistants. The training introduces core skills for teaching undergraduate students. Topics include preparation and teacher-student interactions. Lecturing and facilitating in-class discussions are covered too. Learning strategies in EMI context are explored. E-learning tools are also introduced.
To complete the training students watch six sessions of video lectures. They complete related online activities on UMMoodle. Students also attend an online salon.
