Established in 1987, the Centre for Macau Studies at the University of Macau isn’t just a building. It’s a living archive, breathing with the stories and rhythms of Macau. Originally known as the Institute of Macau Studies, part of the University of East Asia, the Centre for Macau Studies was tasked with a crucial mission: researching Macau’s society to aid its development. The Centre for Macau Studies quickly established itself as a hub for interdisciplinary research. One of its earliest achievements was the launch of the Journal of Macau Studies in 1988. This journal, revived with support from the Macao Foundation after a brief hiatus, stands as a testament to the center’s commitment to local scholarship. Over the years, the Centre for Macau Studies has been involved in nearly a hundred research projects, delving into various aspects of Macau’s complex tapestry. The leadership of the Centre for Macau Studies has seen a fascinating evolution. Initially, the rectors of the University of Macau also held the director’s position. Wong Han Keung served as Deputy Director until 2001. Ieong Wan Chong, Senior Advisor to the Rector, acted as Director from 2002 to 2008. From 2009 to 2017, Hao Yufan, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, took the reins. Currently, Agnes Lam Iok Fong leads the Centre for Macau Studies, having been appointed Director in 2018. Her leadership continues to shape the center’s trajectory, ensuring its crucial role in understanding and shaping Macau’s future. The Centre for Macau Studies remains dedicated to its founding mission. It stands as a testament to the power of research, a beacon illuminating Macau’s past, present, and future.
