“Imagine art without boundaries.” That’s the ethos of the Centre for International Modern Art or CIMA. It stands as a testament to India’s vibrant and evolving art scene. CIMA opened its doors in 1993. ABP Pvt. Ltd., a media group deeply rooted in culture, sponsored it. The centre’s design took cues from renowned art galleries and museums in London and New York.

CIMA quickly became a premier art center in India. It has curated almost a hundred acclaimed exhibitions. These exhibitions have garnered attention both in India and abroad. CIMA catalyses creative excellence. It partners with national and international museums and educational institutions.

Rakhi Sarkar is the Founder of CIMA Gallery. She wanted the space to have a non-commercial aspect. Pace Gallery helped them integrate international practices. That’s how CIMA was started.

Let’s step inside CIMA. The gallery space spans over 11000 sq ft. Its interiors are deliberately white. This ensures the exhibits remain the focal point. The lighting enhances the immersive experience. CIMA also houses CIMA Designs. It is a gift shop where you can find handicrafts, souvenirs, textiles and jewellery.

CIMA hosts interdisciplinary interactions and seminars. Scholars, artists and directors from around the world participate. The centre shines a light on the finest talents in contemporary art.

CIMA’s Art & Heritage Foundation supports art and heritage projects. This foundation initiated the CIMA AWARD Project. It recognizes young artists from across India. The CIMA AWARD is triennially awarded. It discovers genuine talent. It gives artists from smaller towns a platform.

CIMA Art Gallery Kolkata’s flagship events showcase the spirit of creativity. Artistic performances are mixed with thought-provoking discussions. Engaging workshops bring diverse talents together.

One popular event is “Art in Life”. It is an exhibition dedicated to Indian art. Each year focuses on a specific region. Another main event is CIMA’s Art Mela. It is held every October. Here, you can buy prints, artworks and handicrafts at affordable prices. It is a pre-Puja lifestyle exhibition. You can find saris, jewellery, bags and home decor items.

CIMA commemorated its 30-year journey with an exhibition. It was titled “Fantastic Realities and Beyond”. It showcased artworks spanning generations. It offered viewers a journey into artistic evolution.

CIMA continues to evolve. It reaffirms its faith in the power of imagination. It embraces creative freedom. As you leave CIMA, remember its mission. It aims to broaden the cultural spectrum for generations to come.
