Four hundred and sixty megawatts. That’s the power Centrale Drogenbos generates. Enough electricity for half a million people. Imagine that.

Centrale Drogenbos isn’t just a power plant. It’s a landmark in Drogenbos a municipality bordering Brussels. Its history stretches back to 1911. That’s when the first power station appeared. It was a small operation run by the Continental de gaz et d’électricité. It only produced 500 kW. It wasn’t even connected to the grid until 1929.

Over the years Centrale Drogenbos expanded. In 1976 a gas turbine was added. But the real transformation came in 1991. Construction started on the current combined cycle gas turbine plant. It officially opened in 1994. This wasn’t just an upgrade. It was a leap into modern energy production.

The Centrale Drogenbos uses a combined cycle system. This is a relatively recent technique. It combines gas and steam turbines for maximum efficiency. Two Siemens gas turbines power the plant. They each produce 150 megawatts. Two heat recovery boilers boost the steam turbines. A massive GEC-Alsthom steam turbine generates an additional 175 megawatts.

The plant’s cooling tower is a sight to behold. It’s 100 meters tall and 50 meters wide at the top. Two sixty-meter-tall exhaust stacks rise above the heat recovery turbines.

The tower is more than just functional. It’s a canvas for light. Nearly 100,000 LEDs illuminate its surface. They change color and intensity creating breathtaking seasonal displays. The lights even showed solidarity with France after the Paris attacks. The tower displayed a French flag.

Centrale Drogenbos isn’t just about energy. It’s a haven for wildlife too. A peregrine falcon nest sits 70 meters up the cooling tower. Since 2000 a breeding pair has raised 22 falcons. It’s a testament to the surprising harmony between industry and nature.

Centrale Drogenbos. A power plant with a rich past a powerful present and an impressive future. A symbol of technological innovation a testament to human ingenuity and a surprisingly beautiful habitat for peregrine falcons.
