What if I told you this place, the Central Workshop, once played a vital role in keeping India’s trains running and even helped repair warplanes? The Central Workshop at Golden Rock, here in Tiruchirappalli, isn’t just any repair shop. It’s a sprawling 200-acre complex, a vital cog in the Southern Railway zone of Indian Railways. Established in 1897, the Central Workshop originally resided in Nagapattinam. The need for a more strategic location brought it to Tiruchirappalli in 1928. Mrs. R.P. Munro laid the foundation stone in 1926. This Central Workshop quickly became known as the Golden Rock Railway Workshop. Imagine, in the 1920s, this area buzzing with activity as Golden Rock became one of the first places in Tiruchirappalli with electric lighting, powered by its own powerhouse. The Central Workshop even contributed to the war effort during World War II, repairing Royal Air Force planes. Today, the Central Workshop continues its legacy. Over 6,000 employees work within its walls, maintaining coaches, diesel locomotives, and even heritage steam locomotives. They also manufacture wagons and vital components for other railway workshops. The Central Workshop boasts a massive 600-meter long transfer table. They also oversee the conversion of X-class steam locomotives from coal to oil for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. This place is more than just a workshop. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the Indian Railways, quietly ensuring the smooth operation of the nation’s vast rail network.
