Whose “front door” has been boarded up for half a century? Philadelphia’s! The Central Waterfront, once the lifeblood of this city, has seen a dramatic transformation. It was here, along the Delaware River, where William Penn first set foot in 1682, envisioning his “Greene Countrie Towne.” The Central Waterfront quickly became the bustling heart of Philadelphia, a hub of maritime trade, commerce, and even the birthplace of some of our nation’s military forces. Ferries crisscrossed the Delaware, carrying passengers and goods, connecting Philadelphia with burgeoning towns in New Jersey. Dockworkers unloaded ships brimming with cotton, liquor, sugar, and countless other goods. These very docks fueled early American capitalism, transforming Philadelphia into a powerhouse. The Delaware River was our gateway to the world. This Central Waterfront has witnessed more change than perhaps any other place in America. The Master Plan for the Central Delaware, adopted in 2012, charts a course for this waterfront’s revitalization. It seeks to reclaim Penn’s original vision by balancing areas of industry and development with vibrant green spaces and public amenities. Imagine parks, trails, and revitalized neighborhoods bringing new life to the waterfront. The plan calls for a network of civic and public spaces, promoting low- to mid-rise neighborhoods reminiscent of Philadelphia’s historic architecture. It also emphasizes the importance of accessible public transportation to connect the waterfront with the rest of the city. This is more than just a facelift; it’s a reimagining of what the Central Waterfront can be: a place where history and progress intertwine, a space for residents and visitors alike to enjoy, a true reflection of the vibrant city it serves.
