In 1860, Denver was a rough-and-tumble town. A new church, Central Presbyterian Church, was just starting out. Reverend A.T. Rankin and General William Larimer, Jr., two of the church’s founders, headed to the Rocky Mountain News office. They wanted to place an advertisement inviting people to services. They stumbled into a scene straight out of the Wild West. Four armed men were threatening the newspaper’s editor, William N. Byers. Rankin and Larimer bravely intervened, rescuing Byers. This dramatic event launched Central Presbyterian Church into the Denver spotlight. Central Presbyterian Church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The striking red sandstone building was designed in 1892 by Frank E. Edbrooke, the same architect who designed the Brown Palace Hotel. Its Richardsonian Romanesque style, complete with stained glass windows, makes it an architectural masterpiece. The church’s sanctuary, with its curved seating and excellent acoustics, was inspired by Denver’s historic Broadway Theater. Central Presbyterian Church has a long history of service. In 1916, the church founded Presbyterian Hospital, now part of HealthOne. The church also houses several non-profit organizations. These organizations help people experiencing homelessness and provide a safe space for supervised visits between non-custodial parents and their children. Today, Central Presbyterian Church is a vibrant hub. The Denver Philharmonic Orchestra calls the church home, filling the sanctuary with music. Soon, Purple Door Coffee will open in the church’s annex. This coffee roaster provides job training and support to young people experiencing homelessness. Central Presbyterian Church continues to serve the Denver community. It has adapted to the 21st century with renovations. These include new restrooms, an elevator, a children’s playroom, and a remodeled annex. The church’s rich history and commitment to community make it a true Denver landmark.
