A majestic Gothic structure greets you. This is the Central Methodist Church. Its imposing presence speaks volumes. It’s more than just a place of worship.

The Central Methodist Church in Los Angeles isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. This magnificent church wasn’t built overnight. Its story began humbly. A small group from a Los Angeles Methodist congregation started organizing in 1909. They rented a space above a drugstore on Prospect Street. This street later became Hollywood Boulevard.

Their first church building went up in 1911. Designed by H W Wood it was in the Mission Revival style. It seated only 800 people. It was too small. The congregation quickly outgrew this building. It was demolished in the 1920s. It made way for the Guaranty Building.

The congregation purchased land at Franklin and Highland Avenues. They built a recreational hall and gymnasium first. An educational and administrative wing followed. Finally construction started on the sanctuary. Architect Thomas P Barber designed this iconic Gothic-styled sanctuary. It opened in 1930. The $800000 structure is a true Hollywood landmark.

The Central Methodist Church stands as a symbol of resilience. It overcame challenges. The church building is steel-framed concrete. This makes it earthquake-resistant. Its design reflects the English Gothic style of Westminster Hall in London. The sanctuary roof boasts an open hammer-beam construction. It is a beautiful example of American Gothic architecture.

In 1993 the church added a large red ribbon to its bell tower. This was in honor of World AIDS Day. The ribbon has become a powerful symbol. It represents the church’s commitment to fighting for gay rights. The church now attracts a largely LGBT congregation.

The Central Methodist Church hosts the Oaks School. This is an independent K-6 school. The school and church have a close working relationship. They often share resources and staff. The Central Methodist Church also plays a role in Hollywood’s film history. Its architecture and location have made it a popular film site.

The Central Methodist Church’s legacy is one of faith community and acceptance. It continues to inspire many. It’s more than a place to worship. It’s a landmark a symbol and a testament to the enduring power of faith.
