Consider this a journey through time at Central Gospel Chapel. It stands here as a testament to faith community and renewal in New York City.

Central Gospel Chapel’s story began in January 1821. Reverend William Patton a 22-year-old visionary founded the church. He started with his wife Mary and just four other people. They incorporated it as a New York religious corporation on February 6 1821.

Interest in Central grew quickly. The church moved several times within its first 100 years. These moves reflected the city’s changing demographics. Central first resided on Broome Street from 1821 to 1866. Later it moved to 7th Avenue from 1876 to 1915. It then relocated to Madison Avenue from 1915 to 1927.

The Park Avenue location marks a significant chapter for Central Gospel Chapel. John D. Rockefeller Jr. commissioned and funded the current building. He originally intended it for Park Avenue Baptist Church in 1922. Soon after construction the Park Avenue Baptist congregation outgrew the space. This prompted Rockefeller to build Riverside Church.

Central then had the chance to buy the nearly new building on Park Avenue. The congregation met at the Plaza Hotel while Riverside Church was completed. Central finally held its first service at 593 Park Avenue on September 22 1929. This was shortly before the stock market crash of October 1929.

Central Gospel Chapel also housed a significant musical instrument. It originally contained the world’s largest carillon. This 53-bell instrument was commissioned by Rockefeller. It served as a memorial to his mother Laura Spelman Rockefeller. Gillett and Johnston of Croydon England cast the bells in 1925. The carillon was later moved to Riverside Church. But Central’s bell tower remains a striking architectural feature.

Despite its storied history Central experienced decline. This occurred during the latter half of the twentieth century. By the early 2000s attendance dwindled. The church faced collapse due to theological drift and poor financial management. The building fell into disrepair during this time.

A renewal began in 2006. A group of committed Christians started attending Central. They aimed to turn the church around. This small group made considerable progress. The church refocused on the historic gospel. It emphasized biblical teaching Christian community and Spirit-filled worship.

Central has since flourished. Membership average weekly attendance and contributions have doubled. The church family has grown into a culturally diverse body of more than 400 people. It includes established professionals families and students. It also welcomes young artists at the beginning of their careers.

Central’s vision is clear. It strives to experience the gospel’s transformative power. It responds in reliance upon the Holy Spirit. It follows Jesus Christ in his mission. This is to make all things new at Central in New York City and throughout the world.

Central Presbyterian Church is restoring its building. It is restoring the multi-ethnic multi-generational community of God’s people to the church. It is restoring the church’s cultural presence. This is to catalyze and support the Christian community’s engagement with all aspects of City life. It is restoring our imaginations for what God can do in the world in and through our mission.

Today Central Gospel Chapel stands as a beacon of hope. It is a place where faith history and community intertwine. It continues to evolve while honoring its rich past.
