In 1894 a disagreement about organs split a congregation. This led to the birth of Central Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Sixty-five members formed a new church. They purchased land and built a stone building. This cost $4200.00. Central Christian Church stands proudly. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. It’s a place where history whispers. Central Christian Church has deep roots in Houston. Its story began much earlier though. The Christian Church first assembled in 1856. Nineteen members met in the B K Emerson House. H H Taylor preached the first sermon. The church moved several times. It met at the Courthouse. Then it moved to a schoolhouse. Later it was in Thomas U Toler’s residence. Finally it found a home in Mason School House.
Rev Mansfield Mathews became pastor. Services moved to Milam’s Hall. In 1876 land was bought. This was at the corner of South Main and Church Street. A building was erected. This became South Main Church of Christ. The split in 1894 over the organ was significant. The new Central Church received $1357.40 from the South Main group.
Central Christian Church grew. In 1924 an annex was built. Classrooms and an elevated baptistery were added. A basement was built in 1950. This included classrooms a fellowship hall and kitchen. In 1953 the sanctuary was renovated. Air conditioning and memorial windows were installed.
The church continued to expand. In 1960 six and a half acres were purchased. This was in the 1600 block of South Main. A new sanctuary and education building were built. The congregation moved in 1964. A dedication ceremony took place on July 5th. Further additions were made in 1969 and 1990. In 1991 a Texas Historical Marker was presented. Cuppett Hall was added in 1998. A major renovation completed in 2019 modernized the entire campus.
