Tucked away in the heart of Houston, Central Christian Church has witnessed the city’s transformation over the decades. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to the power of faith and community. Central Christian Church has been a beacon of hope and service since its humble beginnings. The church’s history is deeply intertwined with the growth of Houston itself. The church we see today wasn’t the first structure to house this vibrant congregation. Their journey began in 1980. A small group of six churches united with a shared vision. They wanted to create an organization that answered the call to serve those in crisis. These founding churches included St. Luke’s United Methodist, St. John the Divine Episcopal, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Central Presbyterian, Bethany Christian, and St. Stephen’s Episcopal. They understood that by working together, they could amplify their impact and avoid duplication of services. This collaboration led to the incorporation of CCSC, or Christian Community Service Center, as a Texas non-profit. Central Christian Church played a key role in this ecumenical endeavor. They focused on addressing the immediate needs of individuals facing hardship. CCSC became the outreach arm for its member churches. Today, it represents a coalition of 40 diverse Christian congregations. Central Christian Church’s commitment to service extends beyond its own walls. It actively supports organizations like San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries, Christian Assistance Ministry, and Inman Christian Center. The church’s pastor participates in the Ecumenical Center’s Clergy Advisory Group. This demonstrates their dedication to interfaith collaboration. Central Christian Church believes in treating all people with dignity and respect, regardless of their background. They understand that compassion transcends differences. It embraces the shared humanity that connects us all. Their work is centered on reducing the effects of poverty in the local community. They operate with an attitude of gratefulness and humility. Central Christian Church’s mission is to serve the poor, hungry, disabled, and those in need. They accomplish this mission with the help of a dedicated volunteer base. This allows them to maintain a high level of client assistance with a modest staffing structure.
