Founded in 1922 the Central Catholic Library stands before you. This Dublin institution is more than just a repository of books. It’s a living testament to faith learning and community. Father Stephen Brown a Jesuit priest envisioned a place where everyone could access knowledge. He wanted to foster an informed Catholic laity. His dream became reality on June 25 1922.

The Central Catholic Library opened its doors. It offered reading rooms open seven days a week. Four daily newspapers and Catholic weeklies from around the globe were available. Access was free to all regardless of denomination. This welcoming policy continues today.

Tragedy struck in 1932. A fire devastated the library. The Lending Department was damaged. Valuable collections like the Healy Collection were almost lost. Yet the spirit of the Central Catholic Library persevered. The library reopened. It moved to its present home on Merrion Square in 1933. This beautiful Georgian building has housed the library ever since.

Today the Central Catholic Library boasts around 70000 books. They cover a vast range of subjects. From the roles of women in the Church to the natural environment the collection is impressive. It includes some rare 16th-century books. A significant collection of periodicals and pamphlets adds to its depth. The library also features a unique classification system devised by Father Brown. This system makes it easier to find books on Catholic and other Christian traditions. It even includes sections on contemporary issues like the environment and refugees.

The library has special collections. The Stephen Brown Research and Reference Library is a highlight. The Irish Room holds a treasure trove of Irish history both religious and secular. The Carnegie Collection features books on various faiths and philosophies. The Leo Room holds remnants from a guild whose premises were destroyed during the Civil War. The Jerome Room displays books printed before 1850. Some date back to the 16th century. There’s the Kavanagh Room with Bishop Kavanagh’s personal collection. It includes books left by Monsignor Stephen Greene.

The Central Catholic Library is more than just a library. It’s a hub of activity. It hosts talks and exhibitions. It participates in Heritage Week and Culture Night. This dynamic space continues to fulfil Father Brown’s vision. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of knowledge and faith. It is a treasure in the heart of Dublin.
