Contemplate the vastness of space. The Center for Astrophysics stands as a beacon of knowledge. It illuminates our understanding of the cosmos. The Center for Astrophysics or CfA, as it’s commonly known, is more than just a building. It’s a hub of astronomical research. It brings together the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
Founded in 1973, the Center for Astrophysics has a rich history. Its roots go back even further. They extend to the individual histories of the observatories that comprise it. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory was established in 1890. Its initial focus was studying solar radiation. Harvard College Observatory followed in 1839.
Imagine Samuel Pierpont Langley. He was the third Secretary of the Smithsonian. He established the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. It was initially housed in a shed behind the Smithsonian Castle. Langley sought to unravel the mysteries of the sun.
In 1955, a pivotal moment occurred. The Smithsonian and Harvard joined forces. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory moved to Cambridge. It partnered with the Harvard College Observatory. This collaboration laid the groundwork for the Center for Astrophysics.
Fast forward to July 1, 1973. The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics was officially born. George B. Field became its first director. This marked a new era of coordinated research. The Center for Astrophysics began to dominate X-ray astronomy.
Riccardo Giacconi, the “father of X-ray astronomy,” moved his research group to SAO. This led to the launch of the Einstein Observatory. It was the first imaging X-ray telescope. This group also helped create the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Chandra continues to operate today as part of the Center for Astrophysics.
The Center for Astrophysics has been home to Nobel Prize winners. Steven Weinberg won in 1979 for his work on electroweak unification. The CfA Redshift Survey mapped the large-scale structure of the Universe.
Irwin Shapiro directed the Center for Astrophysics from 1982 to 2004. He oversaw the expansion of observing facilities worldwide. These included the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory and the launch of Chandra.
Did you know that the Center for Astrophysics played a role in the history of the internet? In 1986, SAO started developing SAOImage. It was one of the first X11-based applications made publicly available. Scientists at the CfA also began work on the Astrophysics Data System. It is one of the world’s first online databases of research papers.
Today, the Center for Astrophysics hosts more than 850 scientists and staff. It maintains a continual complement of PhD students. The CfA estimates that roughly 10% of the professional astrophysics community in the United States spent time here.
The Center for Astrophysics is a major partner in the operations of several observatories. These include the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory. The Submillimeter Array and the MMT Observatory are included too.
The CfA played a central role in capturing the first direct image of a black hole in 2019. This achievement highlights the Center for Astrophysics’s impact. The CfA rebranded in 2018. It is now known as the “Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian”. This reflects its collaboration between Harvard and the Smithsonian Institution.
