Time stood still within the walls of Cemitário do Prado do Repouso. Its history whispered secrets through the aged granite. This wasn’t just any cemetery. It was the first public cemetery in Porto. A testament to a bygone era.
Cemitário do Prado do Repouso stands as a historical landmark. Originally part of a 16th-century estate. The Quinta do Prado do Bispo held a small chapel dedicated to São Tomás. It was later transformed into a diocesan seminary. The seminary’s church dedicated to São Victor would eventually become the cemetery chapel.
The Liberal Wars of 1832 to 1834 brought devastation. The seminary burned. This destruction paradoxically paved the way for the cemetery’s creation. Regulations forbidding burials within churches accelerated the need for a public space. In 1839 the site was adapted. The incomplete São Victor church became the Capela do Cemitário do Prado do Repouso. Francisco de Almada e Mendonça the first person buried there.
