What stories lie beneath our feet here at the Cemitério de Ordonhe? This is a place where silence speaks volumes. The Cemitério de Ordonhe is more than a final resting place. It is a chronicle etched in stone.

Porto is famous for its winding streets and port wine. But it also holds lesser-known treasures such as the cemeteries in Porto. These sacred sites tell stories of love and loss. They whisper of triumph and tragedy. We will explore how different burial cultures are.

Let us journey into the past as we wander through the Cemitério de Ordonhe. Imagine the lives of those interred here. Consider their dreams and their contributions to Porto.

Until 1835 funerals were held in churches. The Portuguese government introduced reforms that year. They banned burials in churches due to hygiene problems. Burials were to take place outside the city limits. This attempt improved public health.

The reforms were controversial. But they marked modernization for the Portuguese state. The Cemitério Prado do Repouso became Porto’s first public cemetery.

Wide paths connect different areas. Private cemeteries are also on the grounds. You might discover graves of famous Portuguese figures. These include politicians and aristocrats.

Neo-Gothic crypts adorn the landscape. Unique sculptures and lovingly designed details embellish some graves. In some areas the cemetery has a structured layout. In other areas graves are close together like a small town.

The Monumento aos Portuenses Inumados no Prado do Repouso honors citizens buried here. The Monumento aos Vencidos da Revolta de 31 de Janeiro commemorates those defeated in the 1891 Republican Uprising. The uprising sought to overthrow the monarchy. It paved the way for the First Portuguese Republic. The monument shows a mourning figure representing Porto.

The Lapa district is one of Porto’s least touristy areas. The Igreja da Lapa stands with its adjacent cemetery. In 1754 Father Ângelo Sequeira founded the Venerable Confraternity of Our Lady of Lapa. He built a chapel in honor of Our Lady of Lapa. Construction of a larger church lasted until 1863. The church stands on a small square. Its façade is in a neoclassical style. Four female statues represent women from the Old Testament.

Inside the Igreja da Lapa stands the main altar. It is a masterpiece by Manuel Moreira da Silva. In the chancel is a mausoleum with the heart of King Pedro IV. He chose Igreja da Lapa for his heart. It was a sign of affection for Porto.

Next to the church is the path to the cemetery. In 1833 Porto was besieged. Cholera broke out. The Venerable Confraternity of Nossa Senhora da Lapa asked to open a private cemetery. Today the cemetery is considered the oldest Portuguese cemetery from the Romantic period. Cemeteries were places to walk and meditate. The grounds are divided into levels connected by stairs. Chapels and tombs built by Porto’s bourgeoisie are here. Important personalities have found their final resting place here.

Many tombs are well preserved. Others look dilapidated. Some have been deliberately damaged. The Cemitério da Lapa is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Porto.

The Agramonte Cemetery dates back to 1855. It was a public cemetery opened hastily due to a cholera outbreak. The cemetery chapel was built between 1870 and 1874. The cemetery contains private cemeteries of three Religious orders. In the 1870s monuments and family mausoleums were erected.

The cemetery contains a memorial to victims of a fire that destroyed the Teatro Baquet in 1888. Several well-known people are buried in the cemetery. They include the archaeologist António Augusto da Rocha Peixoto and the filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira.

Porto now has eight cemeteries with private sections. This is unique in the country.

As our tour concludes ponder the passage of time. Remember the lives celebrated and commemorated here at Cemitério de Ordonhe. May we carry their stories with us.
