“The traffic here is always a nightmare!” a frustrated motorist grumbled, shaking his fist at the seemingly endless flow of vehicles. We are standing before Cầu Phạm Văn Chí, a bridge that has borne witness to Ho Chi Minh City’s phenomenal growth and the accompanying traffic woes. Built in 2001, Cầu Phạm Văn Chí spans the Lò Gốm canal and serves as a vital link in the city’s transportation network. Imagine this bridge as a microcosm of the city itself, constantly buzzing with activity. For years, the steep 10% incline of the bridge posed a challenge, especially for larger vehicles approaching the intersection with Nguyễn Văn Luông Street. Traffic jams were frequent, with frustrated drivers often caught in a sea of honking vehicles. To alleviate this congestion, a project was undertaken to construct a tunnel right here beneath the bridge. Completed in 2025, this tunnel now provides a much-needed bypass for traffic flowing from Nguyễn Văn Luông Street towards Lò Gốm bridge, easing the burden on Cầu Phạm Văn Chí. Though the tunnel’s completion marks a victory over the infamous traffic snarls, the story of Cầu Phạm Văn Chí is far from over. It stands as a reminder of the city’s constant evolution, adapting to its burgeoning population and ever-increasing demands.
