“Remember the name Pavia” I begin. “It’s etched in history. It’s a name whispered on the wind here in Milan. The Cattura del re Francesco I Plaque right here commemorates a pivotal moment. A moment that changed the course of the Italian Wars.”

This unassuming plaque tells a tale of epic proportions. It speaks of the Battle of Pavia in 1525. A battle that resulted in the capture of King Francis I of France. Imagine the clash of steel. The roar of battle. The desperate struggle for survival. This plaque stands as a testament to that brutal fight.

King Francis I craved the rich Italian territories of Milan and Naples. He shared this obsession with his predecessors. His ambition ignited a bitter struggle with Spain. A struggle that saw commanders’ genius and tactical prowess rise and fall. The shifting tides of war ebbed and flowed.

Francis’s initial success at Marignano in 1515 was short-lived. His victory against the Swiss was impressive. Yet years later his betrayal by the Constable of France. Charles III Duke of Bourbon created a new challenge. This man joined Charles V of Austria’s side. He aimed to overthrow Francis and seize the French throne.

Francis focused on suppressing a revolt. He then tasked his friend Admiral Guillaume de Bonnivet with recapturing Milan. Bonnivet’s army faced many setbacks. The Swiss mercenaries deserted due to a pay dispute. This drastically weakened the French forces.

The Imperialists under Lannoy launched an offensive. They drove the French from Milan. Bonnivet was wounded. The French forces limped across the border. Bourbon then invaded Provence. He laid siege to Marseilles but eventually retreated.

Francis prepared a new offensive. His army was larger and in better spirits. He advanced on Milan. He then linked up with Swiss mercenaries increasing his forces. He captured Milan but a council of war was split over the next move. Should they pursue the Imperialists at Lodi? Or attack Pavia?

Francis chose to attack Pavia a poor decision. The Pavia garrison was heavily fortified. It was led by the veteran commander Antonio de Leyva. The French army was divided. They besieged Pavia.

The siege dragged on. The French ran low on gunpowder. Francis even engaged in political discussions with the Pope. He sent troops to Naples weakening his forces at Pavia. Lannoy received reinforcements. The Imperialists marched to the relief of Pavia.

On February 24 1525 the final battle began. The French were outmaneuvered and outmatched. Francis I of France was captured. The Battle of Pavia became a turning point. The French suffered enormous casualties many nobles lost their lives.

The Cattura del re Francesco I Plaque reminds us of this dramatic chapter in history. It serves as a stark reminder of the brutality of war. It also tells the story of ambition betrayal and ultimately defeat. Remember the name Pavia. It’s a story this plaque keeps alive in the heart of Milan.
