Hidden within the heart of Petrie lies a sanctuary, the Catholic Church Petrie. It’s a place of genuine care, offering support and healing to those in need. This church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Way, is more than just a building. It represents a historical and spiritual journey that has shaped the community for generations. The Catholic Church Petrie’s story begins in 1951. Archbishop Duhig purchased ‘Murrumba Homestead’ from the Petrie family, envisioning a future church and school. Years passed, and in 1963, with the school’s construction delayed, Father Guy took initiative. He relocated a small house from Aspley to the Petrie site, creating a temporary classroom for the nuns who traveled daily from Aspley. Finally, in September 1964, the first combined church and school building was blessed and opened by Archbishop Duhig. A few months later, on November 15, 1964, Father Guy proudly announced the establishment of Our Lady of the Way Parish. It encompassed Petrie, Bald Hills, and Dayboro, with Father Richard Wilson serving as the first parish priest. The name, Our Lady of the Way, holds a special meaning. It connects to the patroness of the Society of Jesus, whose founder, Ignatius of Loyola, believed in the Blessed Virgin Mary’s protection. The name also echoes the historical significance of Petrie as a resting point for travelers heading north from Brisbane. The Catholic Church Petrie has witnessed a succession of dedicated parish priests, each contributing to its spiritual growth. From Father Richard Wilson in 1964 to Father Geo Francis MCBS in 2020, their leadership has shaped the church’s journey. Assistant priests like Father Brian Moynihan and Father Paul Byrne further enriched the parish’s spiritual life. The Catholic Church Petrie stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine, offering solace and support to all who seek it.
