Was it fate or a divine plan that led to the founding of Catholic Church of Christ the King in Los Angeles? It stands as a testament to faith in the heart of Hollywood. Its story intertwines with the glitz and glamour of early Hollywood.

Let’s step back to 1926. Archbishop John J. Cantwell of the Catholic Archdiocese of Monterey and Los Angeles made a dramatic gesture. He founded Catholic Church of Christ the King. The location was right next to Mary Pickford’s home studio, Paramount Pictures. This was on October 31, 1926, the Feast of Christ the King. The feast was only in its second year.

The archbishop intended to send a clear message. He wanted to remind Pickford and Hollywood who truly reigned as king. The gesture was a response to the moral laxity perceived in Hollywood. This was after Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks’ scandalous divorce and remarriage.

Interestingly, the message seemed to resonate. The following year, Cecil B. DeMille created “The King of Kings.” This film perhaps reflected a shift in Hollywood’s consciousness. While that film may have faded, Catholic Church of Christ the King remains a vital part of the community.

Now, look at the impressive statue outside. It depicts Christ the King. He wears a crown, holding a scepter and orb. Inside, the ornate church administers sacraments. It offers spiritual guidance. Since 1958, Christ the King School has been attached to the parish.

The church also serves as the Divine Mercy Shrine for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Catholic Church of Christ the King provides solace. It is a place of worship and community for many.

Consider the history of its school. The ministry of educating children began shortly after the parish’s founding. This was through the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. In 1954, the parish finally had the funds to plan a school.

Construction began in 1958. Classes were initially held in an apartment building owned by the church. The first classes were taught by Mother Adrian and four sisters. There was also one lay teacher. Initially, there were five grades with 116 students. By September 1959, the school opened in its new building.

Today, Christ the King School has ten classrooms. These range from Transitional Kindergarten to eighth grade. The newest classroom opened in August 2014.

Catholic Church of Christ the King stands as a beacon of faith. It is a reminder of spiritual values amidst Hollywood’s ever-changing landscape. It shows that even in the land of dreams, the need for faith and redemption remains. It continues to serve its community. It offers spiritual guidance and education. Its history is intertwined with Hollywood’s.
