Cambuslang’s Cathkin High School buzzes with life today. But can you imagine this vibrant hub once stood as a brand new, £1.25 million building back in 1970? Cathkin High School first opened its doors in November of that year. The opening ceremony was a grand affair, officiated by the esteemed politician Peggy Herbison. Its construction coincided with the completion of the nearby Whitlawburn housing scheme, marking a new era for the community. Cathkin High School replaced the older Gateside School in central Cambuslang. Interestingly, the Gateside site later housed Trinity High School and then South Lanarkshire College before eventually being demolished in 2008. Cathkin High School itself underwent a significant transformation in 2008. The school moved to a brand new campus just north of its original location. This new site also houses a nursery and Rutherglen High School, a special needs school. The old Cathkin High School buildings were then demolished to make way for the Cathkin Rise housing estate. In its heyday, Cathkin High boasted over 1,000 pupils and nearly 90 staff members. The school has a rich history of sporting achievement. In a thrilling victory in May 2018, the school’s football team clinched the Scottish Senior Boys Shield for the first time, defeating St Ninian’s High School in a dramatic penalty shootout. The school’s house system, with houses named Arran, Barra, Jura, Skye, and Tiree, fosters a sense of community and friendly competition among the students. Several notable figures have passed through the halls of Cathkin High School. Former pupils include professional footballers Darren and Derek Young, rugby union player Duncan Weir, and footballer Kenny McLean. So, as you stand before the modern Cathkin High School, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From its grand opening in 1970 to its modern incarnation, Cathkin High School continues to serve the community and shape the future of its students.
