Gazing upon Salford Cathedral, one might wonder about the stories etched within its stones. The Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist, commonly known as Salford Cathedral, stands proudly on Chapel Street in Salford. This magnificent structure serves as the seat of the Bishop of Salford and the mother church of the Diocese of Salford. It’s a Grade II* listed building, a testament to its historical and architectural significance. Salford Cathedral’s history began between 1844 and 1848. Matthew Ellison Hadfield designed this pioneering structure. It was the first cruciform Catholic church built in England since the Reformation. The design drew inspiration from several iconic medieval churches. The west (actually south) front and nave echo Howden Minster. The choir and sanctuary are reminiscent of Selby Abbey. The ornate groined vault takes its cues from St. Jacques Church in Liège. The tower and spire, once the tallest in Lancashire, find their roots in St. Mary Magdalene Church in Newark-on-Trent. The construction of Salford Cathedral was a community effort. Two local businessmen, Daniel Lee and John Leeming, generously donated £1,000 each towards the building and its furnishings. Their contributions are memorialized in chantries at the liturgical east end of the choir. A stunning east window, crafted in 1856 by William Wailes, depicts the rich history of Catholic Christianity in England. It spans from the conversion of Ethelbert by St. Augustine in 597 to the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in 1850. The total cost of building the cathedral reached £18,000. The cathedral’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In 1881, a fierce storm significantly damaged the 240-foot spire. Canon Beesley led fundraising efforts for repairs and refurbishment. He also oversaw the addition of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in the south transept, designed by Peter Paul Pugin. By 1890, the final debt for the cathedral’s construction was paid, leading to its consecration by Bishop Herbert Vaughan, who later became Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster. In the 1920s, the west front turrets were rebuilt after being deemed unsafe. A War Memorial Chapel was opened in the north transept in 1924. By the 1930s, the spire was found to be leaning and was shortened. Further restorations took place after World War II and again in the 1970s, including the installation of a new altar under the crossing. A new west window was added in 1994, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the foundation stone laying. Salford Cathedral has undergone continuous restoration and renovation throughout its history. In 2007, the spire and west front underwent extensive stonework restoration. More recently, in 2018, major repairs addressed roof and masonry issues. Even now, Salford Cathedral continues to evolve, preserving its rich heritage while embracing the future.
