Designed by William Gardner Rowan in a richly decorated Neo-Gothic style, Cathcart Trinity Church stands as a testament to faith and community in the Cathcart area of Glasgow. This building has a fascinating story. It is a story of mergers, evolving congregations and a steadfast commitment to serving others.

The foundation stone for Cathcart Trinity Church was laid on 8 April 1893. Just a year later on 3 May 1894, the church officially opened its doors. However, the story begins a bit earlier. The old church hall, built in 1889, served as the original church. To accommodate the growing community, Buchanan Hall was added in 1912.

Originally, this church was known as the Cathcart United Presbyterian Church. In 1900, the United Presbyterian Church joined with the Free Church of Scotland. This union led to a new name, the Cathcart United Free Church. Then in 1929, another significant change occurred. The congregation became part of the Church of Scotland. It was subsequently renamed Cathcart South Church.

The evolution of Cathcart Trinity Church continued into the 21st century. In November 2002, Cathcart New Church united with Cathcart South. This merger formed the Cathcart Trinity congregation that exists today. The Cathcart South church building was chosen as the official parish church building. The Cathcart New building was sold and transformed into flats.

Look at the elaborate pinnacled buttressed front. Notice the central window. The Art Nouveau stained glass above the center door adds to the church’s unique charm. Also take note of the ventilator tower on the slated roof. These architectural details showcase the Neo-Gothic style.

Cathcart Trinity Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community. It is a community that describes itself as forward-looking and Bible-centered. The church’s mission is clear. It is following Jesus Christ, glorifying God and serving others.

Today, Cathcart Trinity Church continues to be an active parish church. It stands as one of two Church of Scotland parish churches in the Cathcart area. The current minister, Alasdair MacMillan, leads the congregation. With a membership of 255, the church plays a vital role in the local community.

As we conclude our visit to Cathcart Trinity Church reflect on its journey. From its beginnings as the Cathcart United Presbyterian Church to its current form, the church has adapted and grown. It remains a beacon of faith and service in South Glasgow. Its history is etched in its stones. Its future is guided by its mission.
