Reflecting on centuries past what do you think this tower has witnessed? This is the Cathcart Old Parish Church Tower. It stands as a stoic reminder of faith and time.

The first church in Cathcart appeared in the 9th century. Imagine the lives touched within those early walls. Over the centuries, the church evolved. A new church replaced the medieval one in 1707. This too was rebuilt in 1744. By 1831, another new church rose. James Dempster designed it in the Neo-Gothic style. This replaced the 18th-century church, which had fallen into disrepair. The church stood until 1931. But its bell tower remains a proud landmark.

The present Cathcart Old Church construction began in 1914. Henry Edward Clifford designed it in a medieval Gothic style. World War I halted progress. Work resumed in 1923. It was finally completed by 1929 under Watson, Salmond & Gray. Big buttresses and a square tower define its structure. A simplified hammerbeam roof adds to its grandeur.

Look closely. You might notice a slight change in the stone color around the tower. This shows where construction paused. In 1962, the north transept became the McKellar Memorial Chapel.

The Cathcart Old Parish Church boasts impressive features. There is a tapestry of The Last Supper by Charles Marshall. Stained glass windows by James Crombie add color. Douglas Hamilton and R Anning Bell also contributed to the stained glass. An 1890 organ by John R Miller once filled the church with music. It was restored in 1994. It gained electro-mechanical action.

The Cathcart Old Church’s history spans over 800 years. It stands across from the earlier churchyard. The churchyard contains the tower from the previous church.

Cathcart itself is a village absorbed into Glasgow. It sits near Mount Florida and King’s Park. The White Cart Water flows nearby. Cathcart was once part of the Burgh of Govan. Glasgow annexed it in 1912. Yet, it retains its distinct identity.

Note that in November 2024, the final service was held. The Cathcart Old Parish Church is now closed. Yet, its tower still watches over Cathcart. It is a silent witness to generations of change. Its stones hold stories of faith. They tell stories of community, resilience and remembrance.
