What secrets lie beneath the grandeur of the Catedral de San José? Let’s delve into the captivating history of this architectural marvel. The Catedral de San José, as you see it today, is actually a resilient echo of its former glory. Originally known as the Cathedral of Santiago, this grand dame of Antigua has weathered numerous earthquakes, each one leaving its mark. The first cathedral, built in 1545, was a testament to the perseverance of the early settlers. They used rubble from the destroyed settlement in the Almolonga Valley, showing their determination to rebuild after disaster. Unfortunately, frequent earthquakes hampered its completion, and in 1669, a powerful tremor brought the structure down. A new cathedral, designed by Juan Pascual and José de Porres, rose from the ruins in 1680, showcasing the architectural trends of the time. But the earth had more in store. The devastating Santa Marta earthquake of 1773 left the cathedral heavily damaged. Although the capital shifted to Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción (modern-day Guatemala City), the spirit of the Catedral de San José persevered. In 1806, a visionary priest named Rafael José Luna proposed a remarkable transformation: to breathe life into the ruins by establishing the Parish of San José within the remnants of the grand cathedral. And so, the echoes of past grandeur resonated with a new purpose. The Catedral de San José stands as a testament to Antigua’s enduring spirit, a place where history whispers through the arches and grandeur peeks through the scars of time.
