Cătălin Hîldan, nicknamed “The Only Captain” and “The Bulldog,” was a Romanian footballer who played as a midfielder for Dinamo București. He was known for his fierce determination and unwavering loyalty to his club. His career, though tragically brief, cemented his place as a Dinamo legend. This statue, unveiled on March 17, 2002, at the Dinamo Stadium, immortalizes him. The sculptor, Daniel Panait, captured Hîldan’s spirit in bronze.
Hîldan began his football journey at Dinamo București at the young age of ten. He rose through the ranks, showcasing his talent and leadership. He had a brief loan spell at Oțelul Târgoviște, helping them achieve promotion to the top division, but his heart belonged to Dinamo. He returned and became an integral part of the team. He captained Dinamo to the league title in the 1999-2000 season, their first in nine years. He also led them to victory in the Cupa României that same season. Hîldan even earned eight caps for the Romanian national team, scoring one goal.
Tragically, Hîldan’s career was cut short. On October 5, 2000, during a friendly match against Șantierul Naval Oltenița, he suffered a stroke on the field and died. He was only 24 years old. The inscription on the statue’s plaque reads, “CATALIN HILDAN. CIINE PINA LA MOARTE SI DINCOLO…UNICUL CAPITAN,” which translates to “CATALIN HILDAN. FROM LIFE TO DEATH AND BEYOND… THE ONLY CAPTAIN.” His number 11 jersey was retired by Dinamo București in his honor, and the north stand of the Dinamo Stadium was renamed “Peluza Cătălin Hîldan” (Cătălin Hîldan Stand).
