Imagine climbing a steep hill, its path winding like a serpent, passing through thickets of green, where sunlight barely reaches the rough ground. You reach a clearing, a plateau, and suddenly you are standing in front of a massive, ancient fortress, Castro dos Arados. This impressive landmark is a fortified settlement that dates back to the Iron Age, and it has witnessed the passage of centuries, from the early settlers to the powerful Roman Empire, and finally, to the knights of the Middle Ages.

Castro dos Arados boasts three rings of fortified walls, built with rough-hewn stones, some reaching a height of six meters. The walls create an elliptical enclosure, where, within, the remains of round and rectangular houses are still visible. You can visualize ancient people going about their daily lives – farming, trading, and raising families. The inhabitants of this fortified village were skilled blacksmiths, and their tools, made of iron and bronze, have been found in excavations. Their pottery, decorated with intricate designs, tells tales of their craftsmanship and beliefs.

Look down towards the river Douro, sparkling like a silver ribbon, and the Tâmega river, its waters reflecting the sky. The Castro dos Arados strategically occupies a hill overlooking the valley, offering a vantage point that ensured the safety of its inhabitants. The location was not just defensive, but it played a crucial role for ancient trade, connecting the settlement to other communities by the route of the rivers. In the 17th century, a necropolis was discovered at the foot of the hill, with twelve graves carved into the ground. Within these graves, archaeologists have found a treasure trove of ancient artifacts, including pottery vessels, iron nails, and Roman coins belonging to the early Roman Empire.

Can you imagine the whispers of history that linger in the air? The whispers of those who once walked these walls, their lives, their hopes, their fears – whispering through the wind. Castro dos Arados, a testament to the tenacity and resilience of those who lived long ago, standing still, a silent sentinel, guarding memories of a bygone era.
