Castleknock itself means ‘Castle of the Hill’ in Irish. Its strategic location made it a significant site. The parish has a long and complex past. It served as a royal residence for the Danes. In 1167 Roderick O’Connor even encamped here. He was later inaugurated King of Ireland. The castle changed hands many times. Edward Bruce captured it in 1316. Colonel Monk later took it for Parliament in 1642. Owen Roe O’Neil retook it in 1641. The Marquess of Ormonde even encamped there in 1649.

Castleknock Parish Union wasn’t just about warfare. It thrived economically. The River Liffey powered woollen mills. These mills produced friezes jerseys lambskins and Petershams. They employed over 60 people during winter. Nearby Blanchardstown had a worsted and worsted yarn factory. This factory employed 80 to 100 people. There were also mustard and flour mills. A small iron foundry operated at Cardiff Bridge.

The parish’s spiritual life was rich too. The Castleknock church was rebuilt in 1810. It replaced a church built in 1609 on the site of an Augustinian abbey. This abbey was founded in the 13th century by Richard Tyrrell. It was dedicated to St Bridget. The current Castleknock Parish Union is a vicarage in the diocese of Dublin. It’s united with the prebend of Castleknock the rectory of Clonsillagh and the curacy of Mullahidart. The tithes amounted to 560 pounds. Two churches served the union one in Castleknock and the other in Clonsillagh.

But Castleknock Parish Union’s story continues. Today it remains a vibrant community hub. The area houses many schools and even a medical centre.
