“Harry Potter’s house!” That’s what some visitors call Castle Rumble. This unique castle stands in Waterford. It is south of Brisbane. Castle Rumble is the grand vision of Brian Rumble. He is a builder with a passion for castles.

Brian Rumble began this project in the mid-1980s. He transformed his builder’s yard. It became a medieval-themed residence. Castle Rumble features a turret and stained-glass windows. Battlements complete the look. Mr. Rumble’s son, Daniel, his partner, and daughter live there. They accommodate visitors on Sundays from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Brian Rumble was born in Castle Donington in England in 1942. Perhaps this inspired him. He worked on historic buildings in the UK. Warwick Castle was one. So was Anne Hathaway’s cottage. In 1964, he moved to Australia with his family. He lent his talents to churches. St Andrews Church in Brisbane is one example. He also worked on the city’s Grammar School.

Castle Rumble started as a single room. It even had a shower crammed in the corner. Brian Rumble used discarded building materials. He constructed the house. He also made most of its furnishings from them. Gargantuan beams dominate the central area. These came from an old bridge. The roof is uneven but characterful. It is made of reclaimed Welsh slate.

Rock lions guard the entrance. Inside, you’ll find artworks and a museum-like room. Swords, chalices, and shields adorn the space. Gargoyles keep watch over the property. Some find it eerie. Others find it nice.

Brian Rumble built Castle Rumble stone by stone. He carried each block to the tower by hand. He also hauled 45 buckets of cement. It was hard work. But his vision came to life.

Castle Rumble has been used as a function center. It has five bedrooms and two bathrooms. There is also an open fireplace. The property sits on 10 acres. From the turret, you can see 360 degrees. The views stretch to Mt Coot-tha and Mt Glorious.

In 2007, the property was up for sale. The asking price was around $3 million. Brian Rumble’s wish is for the new owners to keep it as a tourist attraction. He is sad to say goodbye to the castle. It is part of who he is. It is part of his family’s lives. Castle Rumble stands as a testament to one man’s vision. It is a magical place built from recycled materials. It offers a glimpse into a world of castles and dreams. Donations are appreciated for the tour.
