Gazing out over the parish of Maughold, can you feel the weight of millennia pressing down on you here at Cashtal yn Ard? This isn’t just a collection of stones. It’s a portal to the Neolithic period. It is also known as Castle of the Heights.

Cashtal yn Ard is a chambered tomb. It stands as one of the best-preserved Neolithic monuments on the Isle of Man. Dating back to around 2000 BC, this site offers a glimpse into the lives and rituals of our ancestors.

The name Cashtal yn Ard means “Castle of the Heights” in Manx. An older name, “Cashtal y Mucklagh y Vagileragh”, translates to “Castle of the Field Pigsty”. Imagine pigs roaming around here. It shows how the tomb forecourt was once used.

Walk with me as we explore this remarkable structure. Notice its west to east orientation. It stretches an impressive 39 meters in length. This location was carefully chosen. It offers extensive views of the surrounding landscape. The views may have symbolized the contrast between daily life on lower ground and the rituals performed here.

Originally, Cashtal yn Ard likely began as a single burial chamber. Over time, it expanded to accommodate more members of the community. The tomb features a west-facing open forecourt. It leads to five stone chambers in the east. The forecourt has been restored. It is made up of large stones. Some stones reach 2.3 meters in height.

Imagine this site in the early 19th century. It was mostly intact then. Sadly, by the mid-19th century, some of the stones were taken to build nearby houses. This exposed the five smaller chambers.

Excavations in the 1930s revealed flints and Neolithic pottery shards. Archaeologists also found 125 white sea pebbles. These pebbles are common at Manx archaeological sites. An earlier investigation in 1885 reported bone fragments of a young person. Urn pieces were also discovered.

Fleure and Neely, the archaeologists, noted similarities between Cashtal yn Ard and the Giants’ Tombs in Sardinia. They also saw resemblances to Bridestones in Cheshire, England. These connections hint at a broader cultural exchange in Neolithic Europe.

As you stand here at Cashtal yn Ard, consider the passage of time. Reflect on the people who built this monument. They buried their dead here. They connected with the landscape in profound ways. The Castle of the Heights isn’t just an archaeological site. It’s a testament to human ingenuity. It is a spiritual connection to the past.
