Established in 1956 Castle Hill Little League Park has a rich history. It began as a vacant lot transformed into a ballfield. This was thanks to the vision of Nick Aromandi. He rallied community members to create the league. Seven neighborhood associations and businesses became sponsors. They financed the initial equipment and uniforms.
Volunteers worked tirelessly to build this park. They converted the empty lot into a usable space. This was the beginning of a beloved community asset. The league grew quickly. It eventually outgrew its original location. Thanks to Councilman Michael DeMarco the league found its present home at 1164 Zerega Avenue.
More volunteer work was needed. Former league president Bill Ruckels donated construction equipment. Parents and community members built the current park. The main field was named after Nick Aromandi. The senior field honors Councilman DeMarco. Charlie Liberman’s dedication is remembered in the T-Ball field’s name.
The league’s growth continued. It expanded to over thirty teams. It provided baseball to over 500 young boys and girls annually. In 2001 the Little Sluggers Academy was created. This academy is for children aged three and four. A major renovation occurred in 2008. Bank of America and Major League Baseball collaborated. Their efforts resulted in in-ground dugouts a press box a modern concession stand a stadium-style PA system indoor bathrooms a batting cage and improved lighting. This transformed the park into a premier youth baseball field in the Bronx.
Today Castle Hill Little League continues its tradition. It’s driven by the dedication of its volunteers. It provides a safe and fun environment for children. Many former players return as coaches or umpires. Their dedication ensures the legacy of this special park continues. The park stands as a testament to community spirit and the power of baseball. The park lives on as a place of joy and competition.
