The Castello Utveggio is not an ancient fortress. It is a monumental palace. It was built between 1928 and 1933. Cavaliere Michele Utveggio commissioned it. Giovanni Battista Santangelo designed it. The style is Neogothic. It resembles a castle with crenellated rooflines.
Initially, it was envisioned as a fancy residence. Soon after, it became the Grand Hotel Utveggio. This luxury hotel offered stunning views.
However, the hotel’s success was short-lived. World War II led to its closure. The area saw Italian and Allied troops.
Later, the Castello Utveggio fell into neglect. It suffered looting and vandalism. Its grand halls stood empty.
In 1984, Sicily’s regional government stepped in. They bought and refurbished the castle. It was transformed into a business management school. CERISDI managed this center. Unfortunately, it closed in 2016.
Interestingly, during the war, the castle served a different purpose. General Patton used it as his HQ. He planned the liberation of Sicily from the Germans here. Imagine the strategic meetings held within these walls.
More recently, in January 2024, good news arrived. Sicily’s regional council approved funds. About 5.9 million euros will refit the Castello Utveggio. It will become a conference center. This promises a new chapter for the pink castle.
