Suddenly a neo-Gothic structure appears. It is the Castello di Villanova. This unusual building stands before you. It was erected on the ruins of an ancient castle.

The Castello di Villanova is in Barberino del Mugello. It is very close to Lake Bilancino. The castle sits on a small promontory in Le Maschere.

Originally, the castle dates back to before the 13th century. The Ubaldini family owned it around 1250. They were known as the ‘da Villanuova’. Later, the Bettini family acquired it.

What you see now is a medieval-style reconstruction. It stands on the remains of the older fort. Parts of the original castle remain. You can see two access gates. There is also a tower and sections of the walls.

Notice the two gates. The main gate is elevated. It features a stone staircase. Behind it, a small tower rises. It has a bell tower. This tower was once part of the ancient San Jacopo Church. It dates back to the 14th century. The tower no longer has bells.

The second gate is opposite the main one. It features a fence.

The Castello di Villanova appears on ancient maps. These maps are called ‘Piante di Popoli’ and ‘Strade dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa’. They were made between 1582 and 1586.

In 1611, the Gerini family purchased the castle and church. Marquis Ottavio Gerini added it to the Villa Le Maschere park. This was one of the largest country villas in Mugello. Carlo Gerini rebuilt the castle in neo-medieval style. It served as a school for local farm children and later as a nunnery.

After World War II, the Castello di Villanova was abandoned. In 1990, restoration work began. The main gate, tower, and stone staircase were repaired. This prevented the building’s loss.

Today, the property is being transformed. The cypress-lined entrance and park are part of this plan. The Castello di Villanova will be a venue for ceremonies and shows. It will also house a restaurant. The restoration respects the site’s historical features. It provides modern amenities. The goal is to maintain the charm. It also wants to ensure practical use.

Consider the meticulous architectural recovery. It carefully studied the complex. It complied with cultural heritage constraints. The result is a complex that blends history with modern needs. The Castello di Villanova retains its historic charm. It offers updated facilities.

As you leave, remember the Castello di Villanova. It stands as a testament to time. It reflects changing uses. The Castello di Villanova is a beautiful site. It is ready to welcome new generations.
