Castello di Montalbano began its life as Rocca de’ Tedaldi, a formidable medieval fortress owned by the Tedaldi family from Fiesole. Legend has it that Charlemagne himself sought refuge within these walls. In 768, during his journey to Rome, he celebrated Christmas here at the invitation of Taldo Tedaldi, who was later knighted for his hospitality.
The Castello di Montalbano’s charm wasn’t lost on everyone. Even Michelangelo, the great Renaissance artist, considered it one of the most beautiful castles he had ever seen. Over time, the castle passed through the hands of many, witnessing periods of renovation and even partial demolition.
In the late 19th century, Laudadio Della Ripa, owner of the nearby Villa del Loretino, transformed the then dilapidated fortress into a comfortable villa, retaining the aesthetic charm of its fortified past. The 20th century brought further transformations. The castle served as a convent, a meeting place for Mussolini and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, and even a filming location for iconic Italian commercials! Today, Castello di Montalbano welcomes visitors from all corners of the globe. Within its ancient walls, history whispers through every stone.
