Caserne 3 has a rich history. It whispers tales of bravery and service. We stand before a structure that has witnessed the evolution of firefighting in Montreal. Caserne 3 stands as a testament to the dedication and courage of the Montreal fire service.

Originally used by volunteer firefighters starting in 1843, Caserne 3 officially became part of the Montreal Fire Department in 1863. Its first location was on Wellington Street, at the intersection of Dalhousie. This era marked a significant shift in Montreal’s firefighting approach, transitioning from volunteer forces to a centralized, permanent service. The original Caserne 3 on Wellington Street served the city until 1872. A new Caserne 3 was then built on the same site, at 154 Wellington. This second station operated until 1914. The current Caserne 3, which we see before us at 256 Rue Young, opened its doors in 1914. Its construction in 1913-1914 originally placed it at 1139 Rue Ottawa, at the northwest corner of Young. The address later changed to its current location.

This building has seen Montreal transform. It has stood through technological advancements in firefighting, from horse-drawn carriages to the modern engines we see today. Caserne 3 is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the unwavering commitment of those who risk their lives to protect this city. It symbolizes the evolution of fire safety and the vital role of those who serve within its walls.
