Hidden within the hills of La Jolla, Case Study House #23C whispers tales of architectural ingenuity. Case Study House #23C is the most unassuming of the Triad houses. It stands as a testament to the vision of a unique housing project. This was meant to be a pilot project for a larger development. This grand vision, however, never fully materialized. Only this cluster of three homes, known as the Triad, came to fruition. Case Study House #23C, completed in 1960, was part of the Arts & Architecture magazine’s Case Study House program. This program challenged architects to design modern, affordable homes for post-war America. The Triad, consisting of houses A, B, and C, aimed to explore the dynamics of multi-unit planning. The architects, Edward Killingsworth, Jules Brady, and Waugh Smith, sought to balance communal living with individual privacy. Case Study House #23C showcases a simple rectangular design. An entry hall divides the house. The north side embraces the breathtaking ocean views. It houses the master bedroom suite and the original living room. The south side holds the family room and kitchen. There are also two children’s rooms and a bathroom. Attached to the south end is the garage, accessible through a service porch. Like its Triad siblings, Case Study House #23C embraces outdoor living. Patios extend from both the living room and the family room/kitchen area. The master suite boasts a small private patio. From this patio, residents can savor the panoramic ocean vista. The children’s rooms open onto a rear play yard. This blend of indoor and outdoor spaces creates a seamless flow. It connects the house to the surrounding landscape. Case Study House #23C stands as a quiet marvel. It is a testament to the enduring allure of mid-century modern design.
