Gazing upon Cascina Villarossa you might not guess its rich history. This seemingly simple farmhouse holds stories of autonomy and transformation. Let’s step back in time and explore the captivating past of Cascina Villarossa.

Cascina Villarossa once stood as the heart of its own municipality. This included the neighboring settlement of Mairano. Imagine this rural area as a self-governing community. It had its own identity and local administration.

During the Napoleonic era between 1809 and 1816 Villarossa became a district of Salerano. This period saw many administrative changes across the region. But Villarossa regained its autonomy after the establishment of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.

In 1861 when Italy unified Cascina Villarossa was home to 458 residents. They lived worked and shaped the community. These inhabitants contributed to the area’s agricultural heritage. They were the lifeblood of Villarossa.

However in 1870 Cascina Villarossa’s independent journey came to an end. The municipality was suppressed. It then became part of Casaletto Lodigiano. Despite losing its autonomy Cascina Villarossa retained its historical significance.

The architecture of Cascina Villarossa reveals more about its past. The farm is structured around a rectangular central courtyard. Buildings are separate. They form the four sides of the rectangle. This layout reflects a typical rural design. It emphasizes functionality and community.

On the entrance side you’ll find two-story farmhouses. These were once homes for farmers and their families. The southern side features stables on the ground floor. Above are hay lofts. The eastern side has a unique architectural layout. It includes three naves covered by sail vaults.

Notice the vertical structures. The farmhouses have continuous masonry. The stables feature pillar structures. Horizontal structures include wooden floors. Roofs have symmetrical double pitches. They are supported by truss structures. These details showcase the craftsmanship of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Today Cascina Villarossa has multiple functions. The former convent lies in disuse. The entire estate is now used for housing and agricultural production. This blend of residential and commercial use keeps Cascina Villarossa alive. It adapts to modern times.

Records show its presence dating back centuries. Maps and documents mention Villa Rossa with Mairano. These archives provide valuable insights. They shed light on the area’s historical evolution.

Cascina Villarossa stands as a testament to Lombardy’s rural history. From its days as an independent municipality to its current multifaceted role the cascina embodies change. Its architecture and historical records offer a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this land. It’s a reminder that even seemingly simple farmhouses hold remarkable stories within their walls.
