The whispers of silkworms. That’s what I imagine Cascina Guzzina once sounded like. Its name itself hints at a rich history. Guzzina derives from “gussetta” the old word for silkworm cocoon. This charming farmhouse complex in Brugherio near Milan thrived on silk production.

Cascina Guzzina is more than just a farmhouse. It’s a living testament to centuries of history. The first records date back to the 1530 census during Spanish rule. It was then part of the Court of Monza and Milan. Its fertile lands produced fine wines. Notable figures like Galeazzo Alfieri and Francesco Pagano owned this precious land. In 1578 St Charles Borromeo further cemented its significance. He included Cascina Guzzina in the newly founded parish of St Bartholomew in Brugherio.

Imagine the echoes of past owners. From the Alfieri family to Count Giuseppe De Capitani from Vimercate. The Sisters of St Ursula and the Pestagalli family also left their marks. Each family added to Cascina Guzzina’s rich history. The entrance on Via Guzzina boasts a distinctive turret. A silent guardian of the stories within. To the south stands the small Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Its profile is part of the complex’s perimeter wall. A commemorative inscription about the Virgin Mary graces its entrance.

A detached wing to the south holds a small convent. Built by Capuchin friars it brings monastic tranquility. To the north Via Volturno leads to a garden villa. The noble De Capitani family built this U-shaped villa in the eighteenth century. It’s a picturesque heart within the farm complex. The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is a gem. Possibly dating back to the 16th century it was part of a Franciscan monastery. Dedicated to various saints over the years its history reflects that of its noble patrons. Inside a small rectangular room holds a raised chancel. A marble balustrade and elegant pilasters adorn it. The gray marble altar is enhanced by exquisite paintings. These depict scenes of devotion. The Virgin and Child Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Paul are the central figures. A seventeenth-century masterpiece above the altar is adorned with crowns of gold silver and precious stones.

Today Cascina Guzzina is a vibrant community. Civilian residences and businesses now occupy the agricultural courts. It is a dynamic blend of history and modern life. Visiting Cascina Guzzina is a journey through time. A place where history meets the present in a captivating embrace.
