Perhaps, the stones of Cascina Copiago could speak. They would tell tales of centuries gone by. Cascina Copiago stands before you. It is a fraction of the municipality of Noviglio in the metropolitan city of Milan. You will find it northeast of the town center toward Buccinasco.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the year 1805. The Kingdom of Italy is proclaimed. Copiago then had a mere 94 inhabitants.

But change was on the horizon. In 1809, a decree by Napoleon led to Copiago’s suppression. It was united with Tainate and Noviglio. The seat of the new municipality was to be in Tainate. But it later moved to Noviglio.

However, Copiago’s story did not end there. With the return of the Austrians, Copiago was briefly reinstated as a municipality. But this independence was short-lived. In 1841, the Austrians reversed their decision. They annexed Copiago again to Tainate. Later Tainate rejoined Noviglio.

Look around. The architecture whispers of its rural past. This is a cascina. Specifically a court-provided farmstead traditional to the Po Valley. It is common in Lombardy. You may also find it in areas of Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. These buildings have existed since the 16th century. They became more common in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Many religious buildings were seized during the Napoleonic era. They were transformed into cascine. The term cascina itself has medieval roots. It was often spelled capsina, caxina or cassina. It may derive from the Vulgar Latin “capsia”. This means corral or stockyard. Another interpretation links it to “caccio” or cheese. This suggests that cascine were once dairy farms.

Note the buildings around the courtyard. They once included houses for the owner and peasants. There were stables, barns, and even mills. Some cascine had public buildings like churches or schools.

Consider the Mulino di Cascina Copiago. It dates back to the 15th to 18th centuries. It is an example of industrial architecture. It served a vital role in agricultural production.

As you stand here, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. You can almost hear the farmers and workers. The Cascina Copiago stands as a reminder of a time when agriculture was the heart of this region. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of rural Lombardy.
