Picture the scene A sprawling farm complex basks in the Italian sun. This is Cascina Cattabrega a testament to rural architecture. Its story begins centuries ago. The main courtyard is a rectangle. It was once the threshing floor. The farmhouse and one stable border the north. The large heifer stable is to the south. Farmhouses are on the west side. The cheese factory and other buildings are east.

Cascina Cattabrega’s history is rich. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries it has witnessed many changes. The original structure was a long building. It included the tenant’s living quarters stables and a large porch. This porch bordered the main courtyard to the north. Two smaller buildings were alongside on the east side in 1722.

A major expansion followed by 1854. New buildings extended along the east south and west sides. The main entrance was at the northeast corner. Other entrances were at the northwest corner and the middle of the south side. The east building likely housed the cheese factory. The west building held the tenant’s houses. The south wings likely served as stables.

Another large expansion occurred before 1890. The south buildings were demolished. A massive new stable was built. It’s called the “Stallo barco” in documents. A rustic courtyard extended south of this building. Additions were made to the cheese factory and the farmhouse. Porches and fences were added.

Today Cascina Cattabrega is a working farm. It focuses mainly on grain cultivation. It’s owned by the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico. The farm’s name Cattabrega is a bit of a puzzle. It’s believed to derive from a now obsolete dialect. It suggests someone who likes to start fights. This name seems ironic given the farm’s peaceful setting and long history. Generations of families have worked the land. The Galimberti family was here in the 19th century. The Dominoni family worked it in the 20th century. Their legacy continues in the farm’s current operation. The story of Cascina Cattabrega is a quiet testament to the enduring spirit of the Italian countryside. Its architecture bears witness to centuries of hard work. It stands as a symbol of resilience against the passage of time.
